May 22nd - Tuesday

Tuesday - A Variety of Adventures!

The Organ at the University of Utah

The organ in the Libby Garner Recital Hall was quite the instrument indeed!  We had a great tour of the chambers and then each had 15-20 minutes to play some pieces and play around with the great stops it had to offer.  Linda, one of the part-time organists on Temple Square and one of the faculty at the University, was our gracious guide for the morning and was amazingly helpful!
This organ was in a french romantic style and the room itself was quite amazing!  By far one of the best performance venues we have seen.  As Dwight later posted on facebook, "a rendering of the future Lutz Hall."  We were so excited to be able to play the organ and had a great time.  Keep checking back for more pictures!

The Cathedral of the Madeleine

You may recognize the name of this Cathedral as we were here just a few days ago for mass and a concert!  Well this afternoon we finally got to play the organ in the loft!  This organ is actually from Ireland (well at least an Irish building).  Again this instrument was inspired by the french romantic style of building and was an exhilarating experience to play!  We spent three hours in the cathedral checking out every aspect of this instrument.
On another side note:  It turns out that the organist went to school with our professor Dr. Moorman-Stahlmn!  What a weird coincidence.  The world really is a very small place when you think about it!
Again, check back for more photos of this organ and our adventures at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.

A Hike to The Peak!

Something we were told that we had to do while we were in Utah was go for a hike, and so that was our final activity on Tuesday!  We decided (with the recommendation of Linda and her husband) to go hike up the mountain that Brigham Young hiked to scope out the valley.  Check back for photos of our epic hike!  The stories can only be told with appropriate photo evidence, who would have guessed that Dr. MS could make it up that mountain (ok not the biggest surprise, but the enthusiasm was).
The best part of getting back to the condo after the Hike was having an awesome home cooked meal.  We had gone out earlier in the day and bought food for grilling including burgers, fruit, and veggies.  We had an awesome meal and reminisced about our trip before heading off to bed and packing up to go home on Wednesday.
